This is my journey through the 30 Day Simplify Your Life challenge. If you would like to join in, you can get the ebook here and follow along.
I am working through the challenge in an order that suits me best, instead of directly following the set challenge order. Feel free to do the same!
Day 7: Electronics and Social Media
Day 7 in the official challenge is actually ‘digital space’ but I will be leaving this for another day. So today we are covering what are officially Days 6 and 8 of the challenge: electronics and social media.
In terms of electronics, I don’t have much to say. I have a few old phones to get rid of and a cable to return to a friend. Not very exciting.
Social media was a bit more interesting. Social media week involves clearing out your primary social media accounts, of friends you don’t necessarily associate with or need in your feed, and channels or pages you follow that you don’t get any value or joy from anymore.
My primary social media channels, in order, are Instagram, Youtube, LinkedIn and Facebook. Here is a summary of my ‘cleanse count’:
10 Unfollowed on Instagram
19 Channels unfollowed on Youtube
127 Disconnected on LinkedIn
15 Unfriended on Facebook
Instagram and Facebook are smaller because I am very careful with the people I add through these channels; I typically don’t follow or friend anyone unless I am friends with them or are genuinely interested in what they have to contribute to my feed.
YouTube was a bit higher because I go through phases of the types of people I watch, so I took the opportunity to unsubscribe from channels that I am not watching at the moment.
LinkedIn was my largest clear out because I do not have a relationship with most of the people I am connected with on LinkedIn. I also changed industry recently; I used to be a marketer and I am now in Data Science for the tech industry. Because of that, most of the people I was connected with were not providing valuable or relevant content to my feed. So I got rid of anyone in the marketing industry who I have not met before.
The next step for Social Media week was to turn off all notifications. This is to help you reduce screen time and gain more control over when you access social media. I switched off most notifications but left Facebook messenger on. I like this part of the challenge because not only are you cleansing your social media, but you are cleansing yourself of unnecessary social media updates. I’m enjoying not having my phone vibrate 20 times a day with superfluous notifications.
So that was day 7 of the 30 Day Simplify Your Life challenge. How many people could you clear out?
