I am working through the challenge in an order that suits me best, instead of directly following the set challenge order. Feel free to do the same!

Day 4: Simplify your life challenge - Makeup and Beauty Products

Day 4 in the official challenge is actually ‘Paper’, but I covered this in my last post. As usual, I’m working out of order but this time, I have also decided to combine two challenge days together and switch it up a bit.

Instead of focusing on just makeup and beauty products, I decided to take on my entire bathroom and tackle ‘the cupboard’. The cupboard under the sink is the kind of cupboard that is typical to many female bathrooms. It is that spot where you hide those unused gift boxes of hand creams and bathbombs that you tell yourself you’ll use one day and never get around to. The spot where old makeup is hidden and unworn jewellery gets tangled up in a spider web of regret and poor organisation.

So today was the day to finally get it under control.

To start with, I came up with three guiding questions that would help me decide what to keep and what to discard:

  • How old is it and is it within the expiration date?
  • Does it work?
  • Do I use it or will I need to use it in the foreseeable future?

I worked through my three ‘everyday use’ drawers first and then emptied out ‘the cupboard’ to see exactly what I was getting myself into. It is ridiculous the kind of junk you can collect over the years, without even thinking about it. Empty boxes, bottles of old sunscreen, bath salts for the bath we never use.

An hour and three large garbage bags later, I finally felt like I had my life in order.

The cupboard went from this:

Bathroom cupboard before declutter

To this:

Bathroom cupboard after declutter

And my ‘everyday use’ drawers underwent a similar transformation:

This has by far been the most satisfying week of the Simplify Your Life challenge. That cupboard has been sitting on the back of my mind for years. I didn’t realise just how good it would feel to finally have it under control.

Everyone has a cupboard like this somewhere in their house. Maybe it’s not a cupboard; it could be a drawer or a shelf or even a room. What’s yours?

I want to challenge you to put some time aside to tackle that space, whatever it may be. You’ll be amazed at how much relief you will feel once you finally get it done.

Note: You may have noticed that this blog was a week late and that my Instagram has been a little bit quieter than usual. I have been out of action this last week because I have recently undergone surgery and had to focus myself towards prep and recovery. I hope to have a post up about my surgery in the coming week but please be patient with me if I am late with publishing again. Recovery can be a bit of a rollercoaster. But I will do my best.
