This is my journey through the 30 Day Simplify Your Life challenge. If you would like to join in, you can get the ebook here and follow along.
Day 1: Set Your Intentions
The first day of the simplify your life challenge by muchelleb is all about setting your goals for the challenge, to give you purpose and keep you motivated.
Now I want to say something right now: I’m not a goal setter. I never have been. But I love the way this challenge approaches goals.
I’m not exactly sure what it is about goals that I don’t like. I’ve just never been one for ‘where I want to be in 5 years’ or ‘what I want to achieve this month’. I think it’s because I want to keep myself open to the possibility that circumstances will change so you simply have to do your best now to prepare yourself for wherever you may be at that future point in time.
But for day one, we had to ask ourselves why we are in the challenge and what we want to get out of it. This is the type of ‘goal’ setting I like. It’s grounded. You think about why you are really doing something as opposed to simply plucking a goal out of thin air that reflects your idealistic dream for your own achievements. It gives you a motivation that lingers and doesn’t slip from your fingers like the green light at the end of the dock (comment if you get the reference).
I won’t share exactly what I wrote because I don’t want to compromise my own behavioural intention but to give you an idea, I’ll tell you a bit about what led me to this challenge in the first place (beyond the 10 day sickness delirium, of course).
At the start of this year, I was a uni student with a boyfriend, a part time job and living at home. Fast forward 6 months and I am a graduated, full time worker with a fiance, who is trying to prepare herself for marriage and life out of home.
A lot can happen in a year and it can leave you feeling a little bit windswept. It did for me, anyway. This challenge came at the perfect time, giving me the opportunity to recenter myself and work out how I want to run my life when left to my own devices. I hope that by the end of the challenge, I’ll feel just a little bit more prepared for life beyond my childhood home.
So. Now that the intentions are set, it’s time for day 2. Are you still with me?
